It is 8 am. The sun is barely rising over the ridgeline as a blurry halo, but I hardly notice before the thought is obscured by the heavily falling snow. The crisp air is heavy with the blanket of flakes falling from the sky, adding to the 8 inches already on the snow stake this morning.
Chatter fills the main square as the Needles Gondola comes into view. Eight inches of powder, early access to the mountain, and other women just as stoked as I am? Pinch me.
This is my third and last week as a part of Snow Divas. We’ve seen one bluebird day and two powder days. We’ve all explored new terrain and had the unique experience of being the first skiers/snowboarders on the mountain, well worth waking up an hour early.
Divas is an all-women, multi-week ski and snowboard clinic. Women often learn from other women in a different and more comprehensive way. I’ve certainly experienced that. The all-women’s clinics I’ve taken, not only in snowsports, but in mountain biking, avalanche training, and rock climbing have all radically improved my ability as well as connected me to an awesome community of women. In Divas, women are partnered with amazing instructors, other women of similar ability, and given three mornings to adventure, explore and grow their skills.
On day one, each woman shared why she signed up for the program. Chiming in from all different seasons of life, one lady received the lessons as a Christmas gift. Another woman sold a vacuum (she received as a Christmas gift) and paid to join the women’s group. She has no regrets.
Tiffany Daines, one of the instructors shared, “I was an intermediate skier, couldn’t keep up with my family, I was in the back seat... until I took an all women's class. It literally changed my life.” Tiffany is now a mom of seven, grandmother to four, and a ski instructor. Her kids said, “Mom, you are a better mom when you are out teaching skiing.”
