The Legend of Old
Ephraim
Almost 100 years ago, in 1912, a grizzly bear named
Old Ephraim lived in the heart of Logan Canyon. He
was large, smart and very intimidating. The
townspeople feared him, and the other animals of
Logan Canyon always stayed out of his way.
One day, Miss Daisy Deer was walking along the
canyon path when she came across Old Ephraim. She
froze with fear. But she soon realized that the big
and strong Old Ephraim was leaning against a large
boulder crying. Daisy Deer stood there for a while
not knowing what to do. When Old Ephraim finished
his cry, he looked up and saw Daisy Deer staring at
him. He was so embarrassed that instead of growling
at Daisy and scaring her away, Old
Ephraim ran away
himself.
Daisy was shocked by this event and went back to her
animal friends to tell them what happened. Upon
hearing the story, Betsy Bobcat said, "He's lonely.
That's why he's crying. I used to get lonely roaming
the mountains. But when I stumbled into this canyon,
I found all of you, and now, I don't want to leave.
I have my friends here."
Robbie Ram and Ryan Rabbit agreed. Then Ryan Rabbit
came up with a plan to help Old Ephraim feel welcome
in their animal community. He and Daisy Deer would
approach Old Ephraim and ask him to protect the
animals. In exchange, the animals would teach Old
Ephraim to ski and have fun.
Their plan worked, and Old Ephraim agreed. At first,
Old Ephraim was clumsy on his skis. But, Robbie Ram,
Betsy Bobcat, Ryan Rabbit and Daisy Deer showed him
the very basics of skiing. Now, Old Ephraim is an
excellent skier. And as promised, Old Ephraim
protected the animals in return. Old Ephraim and his
new animal friends now play and ski all day long.
Once the townspeople saw the animals playing
together in the snow filled canyon, they no longer
feared the large grizzly bear named Old Ephraim.
